Regeneration in Elephant & Castle presented huge opportunities and has attracted new people to the area to live and work. However, with rapid change comes concern among locals about a loss of community.
W worked closely with Southwark Council and local stakeholders in Elephant and Castle, ensuring that regeneration plans are communicated in an open way with local government decision-makers, citizens and businesses. As an extension of community outreach we worked with local businesses and groups to create free events for locals; from long-term residents to new arrivals.
We promoted over 20 local events, from bumper cars on ice at Christmas, baby sleep courses at the local nursery and a vegan breakfast event. Meanwhile our own creation was one of the most talked about: EleFit, a free fitness and wellness weekend, including a Ministry of Sound 80s fitness workout, R&B yoga with the local Gymbox and meditation session with the Tibetan Buddhist Centre. With 150 pieces of coverage and over 10,000 attendees for these grassroots gatherings, the programme is helping to facilitate the granting of planning permission for future redevelopment projects
